Talking about systemic racism is hard, right? And if you believe that old saying “easier said than done,” you might think taking action against racism is even harder.
Actually, ending racism is not hard at all; it is overcoming inertia that is hard.
At BVA we talk about systemic racism a lot! Without action, though, talking runs the risk of hitting a point of diminishing returns — a point at which all parties involved know there is a problem, but rather than solve it we only continue talking about it.
Candid discussion is necessary. Without it, racism can spread like wildfire as society denies its existence and individuals remain oblivious to it.
However, we must never forget that talking about systemic racism is a far step from solving it.
As BVA brings attention to the problem and recruits and educates an army of allies to help in the fight, we have to be very careful not to succumb to the inertia of talk.
It is our mission to keep the momentum of actual change, never resting on the laurels of just talking about that change.
“Words show who you want to be.
Actions prove who you are.”
